CATS Cambridge students join the Davidson Inventors Challenge 2025

CATS Cambridge has entered two student groups into the Davidson Inventors Challenge 2025. The students are all Year 1 A Level students, studying STEM subjects and keen to pursue degrees and careers related to Science or Engineering.

The Davidson Inventors Challenge 2024

The Davidson Inventors Challenge is a new Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) for 2025. The challenge is part of IChemE’s annual Young Engineers Innovation and Sustainability Awards, which encourage emerging engineering talent to explore new ideas in the fields of chemical and process engineering.

Hosted by the University of Cambridge’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB) in collaboration with IChemE and the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI), the challenge provides UK secondary school students the opportunity to work with University of Cambridge researchers and IChemE experts. Designed to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers to create solutions to some of the world’s biggest obstacles, student teams are assigned a mentor to support their project and participate bi-monthly webinars delivered by IChemE experts. Students benefit from access to experts in the fields of chemical and process engineering, allowing them to gain additional insight into the field, its research focuses and current trends.

The Davidson Inventors Challenge is open to UK students in Year 11 and 12 (GCSE Year 2 and A Level Year 1 students aged 16-18). Student teams are asked to select one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which they research and develop an innovation potential solution for.

Students will also attend a webinar on careers in chemical engineering and biotechnology with CEB graduates and mentors. This is an excellent opportunity to hear about university study options and career paths.

CATS Cambridge has entered two teams. Both teams have focused their projects on clean energy and climate action. They recently attended virtual meetings with their CEB mentors to receive guidance on their projects.

The students found the meetings very useful. Year 1 A Level student Chaw said “The meeting was a great help and the mentors’ advice were very useful for me and my members.”

Final projects will be submitted in March. Shortlisted teams will be invited to attend an award ceremony, where they will present their project to an audience of CEB professors, lecturers and graduates as well as industry representatives.

Good luck to our students as they embark on this exciting and innovation academic competition. We look forward to learning more about their projects later in the year.

“At CATS Cambridge, I received a lot of support with my university application process. They helped with all of the details we need for UCAS.”

Viyaleta from Belarus studied Russian, Physics, Psychology, Further Maths as part of her A Level course at CATS Cambridge. She has offers from University of Edinburgh, King's College London, and University of Manchester.

Ihor from Ukraine

“CATS Cambridge helped me a lot with studying and with learning... which prepared me for university. The education back home is not as good as in the UK and there are a lot of opportunities that I can achieve after finishing my degree.”

Ihor from Ukraine Studied Business, Economics and Russian at CATS Cambridge as part of his A Level course. He has offers from King's College London, University of Manchester and Queen Mary University of London.

Participating in academic challenges and competitions is an excellent way for students to explore their subjects in more depth and practically apply their knowledge and skills with a real world project. CATS Cambridge facilitates students to participate in a variety of competitions and challenges to

Discover Academic Excellence
