The best 5 things to do in Cambridge during Winter

Winter is one of the prettiest times of the year, and this is particularly true in the beautiful city of Cambridge. Stunning views in the historic city, and the surrounding small towns and countryside make it easy to fall in love with Cambridge during the winter months.

To make the most of the Cambridge winter experience, here are 5 things we recommend doing in, and around the city!

Christmas Light Switch On

Every year, the Christmas light switch on is held in the market square, usually towards the end of November. There is lots of entertainment to enjoy, including rides, market stalls, games, food, and drink. The extravagant light display is sure to put you in the Christmas mood and begin the festivities!

Ely Cathedral Christmas Fair

Although not directly in Cambridge, Ely is only a 15-minute train journey away, and with its annual Christmas Gift and Food fair being hosted in the stunning cathedral, it is not one to miss! The fair is recognised as one of the major Christmas fairs in the country and last year attracted around 17,000 visitors.

Every year Cambridge hosts its very own “Winter Wonderland” experience on Parkers Piece, filled with market stalls, a pop-up ice rink, a cosy cabin bar for food and refreshments, and, of course, lots of fun rides!

Christmas Pantomimes

Both the Cambridge Corn Exchange and the Cambridge Arts Theatre put on traditional pantomime productions during the Winter months. Guaranteed to put you in the Christmas spirit, these performances often feature some brilliant actors and are incredibly popular with the Cambridge community.

Nature in Winter

Surrounding the city are lots of beautiful natural spots that will be sure to take your breath away during the winter months (and not just because it’s cold!). Why not wrap up warm in your best scarf and puffer coat and venture out into nature to take in these stunning views! Top places we recommend exploring are; Grantchester, Ely, Anglesey Abbey, and the Wimpole Estate.

We are incredibly proud to be situated in such a beautiful city that provides inspiration all around. To find out more about why Cambridge is such a great study destination visit our city page.
